Depending on each individual patient case, they may receive full or partial dentures. Full dentures are used when all of the natural teeth are removed from the mouth and replaced with a full set of dentures and partial for one or more missing teeth.

Dentures are prosthetic devices used to replace missing teeth, supported by adjacent tissue of the mouth. Conventional dentures are removable. You'll typically begin wearing conventional dentures after your gums heal following tooth extraction. Prosthodontics is a term used for branch of Professional Dentistry, which constructs replacements for missing teeth and adjacent tissues with artificial substitutes.

There are different types of dentures:

Conventional Full Dentures

This is when all the teeth are removed and the tissue is given time to heal before the dentures are placed. It could take a few months for the gum tissue to heal completely, and during this time you will be without teeth. Complete denture have full acrylic mouth piece that adheres to the gums and roof of your mouth. Dentures can be closed or open palate, and they may require denture adhesive to hold them in place.there are many different denture designs, some rely on suction ,some on bonding or clasping onto teeth or dental implants. Depending on arch, there are two main categories of full dentures, the lower mandibular and the upper maxillary .If your teeth are extracted ,you will need to wear immediate dentures and than after eight to 12 weeks you can wear conventional dentures.

The denture process usually takes several visits . your dentist will work with you to make sure you have a comfortable fit. If you missing one or all of your natural teeth, complete dentures are the traditional method of tooth replacement. But if you are only missing some of your teeth, partial dentures can be made to replace your missing teeth. The comfort of complete dentures depends on a lot of factors including your muscle, bones, tongue, and saliva.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are another option when not all of your teeth need to be removed. This is similar to a bridge, but it is not a permanent fixture in your mouth. You will need partial denture when only some of your teeth are missing. Removable partial denture consists of multiple teeth on a gum colored base.Metal clips are used to attach the dentures to your natural teeth and are less dependent on suction. Not only does a partial denture fill in the spaces created by missing teeth, it helps in maintaining tooth alignment by preventing your remaining teeth from shifting.

Partial dentures are made of plastic(acrylic) or metal. Depending you your needs, a plastic denture can be with metal clasps to attach it to the teeth or can be without metal.

The metal dentures have thin straps of metals which cover only part of the oral mucosa and have metal clasps to attach to adjacent teeth. They are comfortable but more expensive. The metal used in partial dentures is chrome cobalt. A very strong rigid material.

Immediate Dentures

Prior to having your teeth removed, your dentist takes measurements and has dentures fitted for your mouth. They may serve as a temporary set while your complete dentures or partial dentures are being finished. After removing the teeth, the dentures are immediately placed in your mouth. The benefit is that you do not have to spend any time without teeth. You will, however, need to have a follow up visit to refit your dentures because the jaw bone will slightly change shape as your mouth heels. The dentures will need to be tightened after the jaw bone has healed. If some shifting take place in the immediate dentures ,as swelling goes down and healing take place than your dentist will make adjustments to align the dentures.

There are many benefits of dentures to replace missing teeth as it will stop the remaining teeth from shifting ,migrating and realigning your bite .Dentures help keep facial muscles from sagging, which can make a person look older. You'll be able to eat and speak and smile. You have to keep your denture clean and follow your dentist instructions to maintain dentures.

It’s hard at the start when you first get dentures ,and takes little time to get use to it. During this time if you get sores spots we will adjust the dentures for you. To allow your mouth to rest always remove your dentures at night.Dentures, typicaly lasts 5 to 10 years with good care but over time the shape and density of bone and muscles changes and denture may need adjustments or replacement, to get a good fit.

After getting new dentures you you won't be able to chew well . Dr Ali, will give you instruction to make it easy for you and to get use to the new denturs. It may also take a little practice speaking with a new denture. But once you get use to it will be easy. Other options

There are many alternatives to removable denture, you can talk to your -Lodi dentist -Mary Ali D.D.S to see If these denture alternatives are right for you.

To replace a missing tooth or teeth, a bridge can be used instead of a denture. Gaps left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift into the empty spaces, resulting in a bad bite. Bridges are cemented to the natural teeth or implants on both sides of the empty space. These teeth are called abutments. They serve as anchors for the bridge. A replacement tooth, called a pontic, is attached to the crowns that cover the abutments. Bridges can be made of different materials, your dentist will recommend according to the location of the missing tooth (or teeth), its function, aesthetic considerations and also cost .Unlike a partial denture, you can't remove a bridge to clean it, but you have to keep the area around and under the bridge clean .

Dental implants

If you have one or more missing teeth ,instead of dentures you can have dental implants which, is permanently attaching an artificial tooth to your jawbone to replace your missing tooth or teeth. Titanium metal posts are inserted into your jawbone surgically and are allowed to bond with the jawbone .When the site is fully healed, they can be used as the stable support for the replacement of one or more teeth.

Implant-Supported Dentures and Partials. If you want a secure full or partial denture and do not want clips or adhesive, then consider implant-supported dentures. In a surgery, A few Titanium posts are embedded into the jaw bone surgically .These posts are used to securely hold your denture in place .

Caring for Your Dentures

To properly maintain your dentures, wash them daily using a soft bristle dental brush and denture cleaner, hand soap, or mild liquid dish soap and cold or warm water. Soak your dentures in water or denture cleaner when they are not in your mouth to prevent them from drying out.

Remove your dentures at night, as wearing them can cause tissue irritation, fungal infection, and increased bone loss. If your dentures become loose or painful, it is time to see your dentist to evaluate if they need an adjustment, a reline or replacement

With all the modern denture technology we cannot produce a denture that will fit perfectly for the rest of your life . First time denture wearers as well as seasoned denture wearers will find themselves suffering sore gums from time to time for various reasons. Denture wearers should always cut hard foods into small pieces before chewing. It puts way too much pressure on those gum ridges, and this will surely make them tender. With age shrinking gums and bones can ruin the once perfect fit of your dentures. Once the gum begins to change shape, the once perfect original fit is lost and the dentures are now free to move and rub against the gums, causing sore spots. one cause for some of this shrinkage is a process called resorption. When the bone ridges in the jaw no longer have the roots of the natural teeth to provide pressure stimulus, bone production begins to decrease, eventually ceasing completely. Gum disease also causes shrinkage of the dental ridge. Dentures can be adjusted periodically to help restore a better fit, but eventually the ridge is too small to support a denture.

With good fit pain should not be an issue but when the fitting gets loose and denture begin to rub against the gums ,sourness and swelling starts. Why do dentures lose their fit? Each individual is different, and the shape of the dental ridges are always changing especially with age. Over time, the boney ridges begin to deteriorate and the denture becomes loose and will not fit on the changed gums and tenderness and swelling starts . Tender swollen gums, pressure sores, and tired aching jaws, when this happens visit your dentist ,may be its time to adjust ,reline or replace dentures.

Your dentures may take some time to get used to. Never force denture or use biting down to place denture. With good hygiene habits it should last longer. The flesh colored base of the dentures is placed over your gums. Some people say that it feels bulky or that they don't have enough room for their tongue. Other times the dentures might feel loose. These feelings will affect the way you eat and talk for a little while. Over time, your mouth becomes trained to eat and speak with your dentures and they begin to feel more and more like your natural teeth. They may never feel perfectly comfortable, but it is much better than the alternative of not having teeth.

Even though dentures are not real teeth, you should care for them like they are. You should brush them to remove plaque and food particles before removing your dentures. After they have been removed you should place them directly into room temperature water or a denture cleaning solution. Never use hot water because it could warp the dentures. Your dentures are delicate, so make sure you are careful when handling them so you don't drop them. Also, never try to adjust your dentures yourself. You could ruin them, so you should always seek assistance from your dentist if they feel uncomfortable or loose.
